Based on the short story “The rats do sleep at night",(1947) by Wolfgang Borchert. Narration by Abeer Ali Mohamed. The audio is based on a very sad and touching story by the German post-war writer, read by the Berlin based Egyptian actress in English transforming the plot from the past into the present. The child character's name is changed from Jürgen to Layla, creating a shifted new context for the listener, it places the story in our time of endless war and destruction cycles in west Asia. There is tension between the old man and the vulnerable child, does he want to help her or just the opposite, in between good and bad, rabbits and rats the story stays open for the listener's imagination.
